RAJAR Q3/2019 – Matt Deegan Writes

The stations with high average hours do well - and these tend to be the older appealing ones - R4, R2, Classic and LBC. The younger stations with shorter consumption lengths start to drift. With commercial radio now just three lager radio groups, the idea of a single station being the be all and end all, is long gone. - www.mattdeegan.com

'You can't stop people watching': why BBC subscriptions are a long way off

Other free services such as the incredibly popular BBC News website would have to disappear behind a paywall, while the public have historically been upset at the prospect of adverts appearing on BBC radio or television. The theory within the BBC is that people are happy to knock the corporation until they face up to the reality that they would lose a specific favourite service. - www.theguardian.com

The Guardian view on the BBC: watch closely

The transformation of the global media landscape by streaming services makes the compulsory 154.50 charge harder to justify than it was when the BBC dominated the UK's television landscape. Last month Mark Thompson, the BBC's former director-general, gave a speech arguing that commercial and technological innovation by the BBC has been stymied by a combination of hostile politicians, rightwing competitors and an outdated regulatory framework. - www.theguardian.com

TV licences: Call for government and BBC to save free over-75s licences

The BBC and the government should find a way to save free TV licences for all over-75s, a committee of MPs has said. The MPs said he failed to seek the formal agreement of the BBC Executive Board before recommending to the BBC Trust the deal struck with the government, and that the BBC should have communicated earlier that it would not be able to fund all the free licences from 2020. - www.bbc.co.uk

BBC warned over TV licences as younger viewers flock to Netflix

MPs have warned about the increasingly dire state of the BBC's finances as competition from Netflix pushes up the cost of making programmes, and called on the government to find a way of ensuring all over-75s continue to receive a free TV licence. The corporation argues that the 745m annual cost of maintaining the status quo would have taken up a fifth of its budget, equal to the total amount it spends on all of BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, the BBC News channel, CBBC and CBeebies. - www.theguardian.com
