Hello, I live in the Sale area south of Manchester. I cannot find a definitive answer as to whether the fact thaI, for the past few weeks, I get a 'weak or no signal' display for BBC NEWS HD and BBC 4 HD plus the others in that multiplex is a transmitter issue. As far as I know, I am tuned to the Winter Hill transmitter and all was fine until relatively recently. Does anyone know how long will the disruption last?

David:
To try and help with this kind of problem it is essential that we are given an indication of where you live, by giving a post code or that of a nearby public building. From that information it is then possible to detemine which is the correct transmitter to use, whether there are any physical obstructions between you and the transmitter and whether there are any know defects.

I live close to Sale and according to the signal strength metering on my Humax Fox T-2 PVR, all 10 multiplexes at Winter Hill are operating normally. There was no power reduction when I checked 10 mins ago, nor have I seen any this year at all. Even the Canis Media GMan multiplex, although low level at my location, usually works OK on my loft aerial. In Sale you should be able to receive all the main HD and SD multiplexes , including coms 7&8, together with "That's Manchester" without any problems. Any power reductions at Winter Hill are likely to be during daylight hours for maintenance and probably quite brief.

David: You are picking up a different transmitter than Winterhill. Depends on your tv as to how you sort it. Could be North Wales or ano North West transmitter. I have a Panasonic Smart tv that automatically sorts for the best (i.e Winterhill) signal. I also have a Technomate TM 6902 european box that picks up exactly what you are describing - on this box, I can manually delete these weaker signal stations.
If you can, depending on your box - try starting the scan from the frequency channel range specific to Winterhill. I had to do this on my m-in-laws Humax Freeview box to eliminate weaker Welsh channels that the box was picking up.
I am in South Manchester too.

After very poor reception a week ago, all signals were back correctly the following morning. That evening though every channel had disappeared. Following reset and then re-tune can get most channels but not a lot of the HD Channels anymore. This seemed to have affected some of my neighbours to.

Kev Hinde:
It is likely that your are subject to the disturbancescaused by temperature inversions, a perfectly normal atmospheric effect that is well known. Now that the cause, high pressure areas and warm atmosphere, are moving away it is likely that reception will improve. Hope you have not tried to retune else you may have lost some services.
