Ken I: I have Rdr-hxd790 which went the same way last night. Now stuck in update for 2 hours. Contacted Sony twice, no reply as yet. Pointed out that other boxes in the house are working fine and that it cannot be 4g testing as my filter is already in use. Will never buy Sony again. This is just the latest in a longline of problems.

Peter J: Addition to my post above. Any graphics linked to freeview tuner has been changed to different colours.IE signal strength channel lists epg & only appear on screen 2 seconds then crash. Internal graphics Sys menu etc are unchanged. This suggests that the freeview tuner has somehow been corrupted. However as the machine sticks on UPDATE every few hours & doesn't switch off its. not much use & will have to be unplugged. My son has the same machine on an indoor aerial tuned to a local relay & this is unaffected. Hope this info helps whoever to solve the problem though I don't hold out much hope.

Pete D: It's been suggested to try a factory reset, and then a tune without aerial, finally tuning with the aerial in. I don't know if it will work but worth a try.

Peter J: Thanks for that Steve. Have tried & its still the same. Its the new on screen graphics I can't understand they look like they have have downloaded from somewhere & I always keep software updates turned off. I have e-mailed the details to sony UK to see if they have an answer but Ill not be holding my breath.

My Sony 870 has been having problems since last night, freezes in 'up date' mode (to clear this unplug for a few minutes, plug back in and switch on immediately or unplug and try factory reset) epg blank and channels don't display picture.

correction to above - obviously you must plug back in before doing factory reset! ;)

J Carroll: Hold the Standby button on the machine for about five seconds when it locks up, rather than powering off at the mains.
Set the Country to France when doing an "Easy Setup". Presumably France uses a different EPG system as it isn't populated, but at least programmes can be viewed. I guess that the effect is to disable the EPG which appears to be the source of the issue.

Thanks Sue and Dave
I've set to France and this has brought back the picture (wrong format but at least it's back). No digital guide but manual set for record works, though switch off end means the reset to France is needed again when turning back on.

J Carroll: What did you mean by "wrong format" in your response?
