Jane: The Digital UK postcode checker does not currently show any reception for Sutton Coldfield at your location so propagation must be better than expected if you normally have good reception. It is worth noting that after switchover the COM muxes from Sutton Coldfield will be co-channel with Moel Y Parc and reception of the PSB muxes is shown as becoming poor in 2012. The Wrekin is shown as giving good reception on the PSB muxes from 20th April 2011 and all muxes from 28th September 2011. Fenton is predicted as giving good reception on all muxes from 21st September 2011, although if you are unable to receive the analogue services at present it would suggest that this is over optimistic! You might find that any aerial installed now might need re-directing in the future.

Jane: Using the postcode ST3 5TJ rather than the one in the links gives a prediction of good reception on all muxes for The Wrekin from 20th april 2011

The more I look at why I can't get an HD signal, the more confusing it becomes. Briantist suggested that I tune the best Ch5 analogue signal to obtain HD,but I couldn't improve it. The info on this site doesn't suggest that I can get Ch5 from Sutton Coldfield at my postcode B90 4XB but another site suggests I need a Band B aerial whereas I have a high-gain wideband loft mounted. Does anyone know if a change of aerial would improve things?

Your aerial is looking at Sutton Coldfield, but the HD transmission is from nr Lichfield,
It would seem that you have a hi-gain antenna, this would tend to limit the capture of signal,to a very narrow area, in degrees and miss the HD signal.
I am sure it will be fine, come digital switch over, when the HD multiplex moves to Sutton Coldfield on high power.
Take a look at the enclosed,it refers to ''analogue'' reception but gives the location of the Sutton and Lichfield transmitter sites.with reference to your location,

Thanks Andy, I will take a look. If I don't want to wait 6 months, do you think that a new aerial will make a difference?
