The symbol shows the location of the Mendip (Somerset, England) transmitter which serves 720,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Mendip (Somerset, England) mast?

I receive from the Mendip mast. This evening I have tried to retune BBC A to C49 but no channels are found. I have lost BBC1,2,3 and 4. I have followed all manual tuning instructions, is C49 more difficult to receive than the old C61?

@Dave Lindsay: we lost those channels sometime during the several retunes we've had to do over the past 2 weeks since this business started. I naively assumed we'd get them back today.

Tried the manual tunes you suggested but couldn't find anything - thanks anyway. Would still like to know what has actually gone wrong.

Tony Ellis: Refer to this list of services by multiplex:

DTG :: DTT Services by Multiplex

The Public Service (PSB) channels broadcast from all transmitters that former analogue did, hence it has the same coverage. The Commercial (COM) channels, which are those you're not getting, only broadcast from the largest, by viewer population, transmitters.

Bath has its own relay which is PSB-only. Thus, anyone who uses it won't have the COMs. In some cases it may be possible to use Mendip instead, so as to receive PSBs+COMs.

The only thing I can but wonder is if your aerial faces the Bath relay, which is next to Bath Golf Club. Even thought it's vertical and pointing in the other direction, you were lucky and managed to pick up Mendip's COMs.

If so then maybe you need to pester your landlord, or whoever's responsible for the aerial system, to get them to change it to receive from Mendip.

Bring up the signal strength screen on BBC One. For Bath relay it will be tuned to C25 and C49 for Mendip. And for ITV it will be C28 for Bath and C54 for Mendip.

One final question: What are the retunes that you've had to do? Choose which transmitter you're using there haven't been any retunes until today.

John Crabb: Shouldn't be. If you're using a communal aerial then maybe it needs adjustment so as to let through the new channel.

Dave Lindsay - Many thanks for reply. Apologies - I've only just seen it. Yes, I think we do have a communal aerial. Have tried manual retunes on 2 of our 3 TVs, but got nowhere. Lost all BBC - as well as ITV3, 5*, 5USA which we lost some time ago - on all of them. Don't suppose you can suggest any solutions? Thanks...
Alison
PS BBC R4 FM reception virtually nil here too! Do listen on laptop, but would prefer via Freeview.

Alison: If the issue is with the aerial system then it's probably out of your hands and should be reported to the party responsible.

I asked if it is a communal aerial system because they are sometimes filtered so as to only let through (from the aerial) the channels/frequencies that are used by the transmitter.

Refer above under the heading "How the transmission frequencies change over time". Down the left-hand side are channels numbers and left to right is time (years). C49, BBCA (BBC standard definition services) has never been used before. C48, which is SDN (ITV3, 5*, 5USA etc) had never been used prior to switchover. If you lost COM4/SDN at switchover (Spring 2010!) then that might be because it is being filtered out and the aerial system hasn't been adjusted accordingly.

@Dave Lindsay: thanks for your time. I think you're right, we were receiving the Mendip transmitter - certainly we had dozens of commercial channels. Will talk to our management company.

The retuning I mentioned: on Mar 15 I found we suddenly had interference on most channels. A retune fixed it. A few days later another was needed which I think is when we lost the COMs. I assumed it was all part of the ongoing reshuffle.

I retuned yesterday to C49, got all its channels at full strength and quality all day, even after switching off and on again... This morning (9.20am) they have all vanished - blank screens/"no signal" - though it still claims 10 for strength and quality on the tuner for C49. Other multiplexes okay. Has the maintenance work on PSB1 resumed?
