The signal pass-through of your Panasonic HD recorder electrical requires power to send the signal from the input socket to the output socket - it is not a simple direct connection but has some electronics in between. That needs to be powered to allow it to perform the pass-through properly. Hence it was attenuating signals differentially but returned to normal as soon as the power was returned.

Would there be any reason I'm not receiving all available HD channels on my new television? I receive just BBC 1 and 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
Do I need a Freeview box?

Normally you need a Freeview HD equipped television or set top box. If your equipment is described as Freeview HD then it can receive the HD programmes providing you have a wideband aerial, changes to the transmission channels earlier this year meant that the older Group A aerials are unable to receive any of the HD channels provided on the COM7 and COM8 multiplexes. (An HD Ready television will not receive the HD transmissions as the description only applies to the screen capability.)
If you also give a full post code we can check the expected reception conditions at your location and advise accordingly.

Hi, we have had trouble with Channel4+1 HD for sometime and since rescanning we have lost it all together. Checking with your information on the Cyrstal Palace transmitter we have completely lost all channels in Com7 and Com8 groups - the 700 MHz band. Does this mean that our aerial is incompatible, or does it just require realignment?

Geoff Baldwin: COM7 & COM8 changed frequency at Crystal Palace several months ago and now reside in the upper part of the UHF band which the Group A aerial that you most likely have isn't designed to receive. Had you acted at the time of the change you would have likely been eligible to have a replacement wideband aerial fitted free of charge, but I suspect too much time has passed for that to be available now.

There was considerable publicity about the changes back in the spring. You could call Freeview on 0808 100 0288 and ask if the free replacement aerials service is still applicable to you. You will need to tell them that you cannot get COM7 or COM8 as you have an old Group A aerial. Note that if you also have cable TV or Satellite the offer never applied.
If they are unable to assist, then you need to talk to a local aerial contractor and have a wideband aerial fitted in place of your current Group A aerial. Don't let them confuse the issue by talking about needing a 'digital aerial' as there is no such thing.
