Paul : An increase in signal strength will have no impact on the "crispness" or otherwise of a digital television signal. It is simply impossible as it is DIGITAL service not an ANALOGUE one. Please see How digital television works | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

The signal strength and the coloured boxes your devices use to indicate this is mostly irrelevant. What matters is that the QUALITY is sufficient for reception of the digital multiplex with no bit errors.

Lost BBC1 and BBC2 off my Humax 9200T freeview box a couple of days ago. Went through the retune stages as detailed elsewhere on this site (including retune with aerial disconnected) and all channels came back as normal. The problem I have now is with the EPG on the Humax, which is not loading all data for all channels... data for Monday and beyond is practically non-existant. I read on another page that I need to "add the 8k channel manually" until the switchover is complete, alas this means nothing to me :-/ Can anyone assist? Cheers, Craig

Craig Jones: On the Humax, make sure you do a 'Default Setting' to clear all existing channels before allowing it to auto-retune. Press MENU, go to Installation, enter the password (default is 0000) and select Default Setting.

This will delete the recording schedule and reset all other parameters to defaults as well as deleting the channel list before rescanning from scratch. You will need to restore the 16:9 mode if you have a widescreen TV (MENU > Preferences > A/V Control) and you might need to move the RF output to a different channel if it clashes with something (default is C36).

If that doesn't correct the problem, or that's what you've been doing, delete all the BBC channels - including any duplicates in the 800s - by pressing MENU, selecting Edit Channels, then Edit Channel Lists. Scroll through the list of channels pressing OK to select the ones to delete, then move the highlight to the Delete button and press OK. Press OK again to confirm.

You can then manually retune by pressing MENU, going to Installation, Manual Search. Highlight Channel, press OK, and select 60 from the drop-down list, then press OK. Move the highlight to the Search button and press OK to search that channel. It should list all the BBC channels - select Save to store them.

If it still doesn't work, do the Default Setting and cancel the automatic scan when it starts. Then use Manual Search to scan channels 60, 65, 56, 66 and 62. Don't scan the multiplex on C59, it now only broadcasts duplicates of a few channels on C60, plus Sky Sports 1 and 2 which are encrypted so you can't watch them anyway.

Hopefully on the 21st you will just be able to do an automatic rescan - you should use Default Setting again.

You may find that the box is storing off-beam signals from Ridge Hill or The Wrekin at the normal channel numbers, because they're on lower frequencies than the ones from Brierley Hill, which will be stored in the 800s. In that case, you will need to do a manual retune. (To check, while watching BBC One, press MENU and select Status, Signal Detection, and make a note of the channel number. If it is 26, that's The Wrekin/Bromsgrove/Lark Stoke, while 28 is Ridge Hill.).

Mike Dimmick: I ran through your various suggestions on Friday night. BBC was already mapped to channel 60, so instead I manually searched the channels you suggested. The result was that I still had problems with the EPG... the listings Friday through to Sunday were fine, but Monday onwards was very patchy with huge gaps in the listings... I made a list of all the channels that were missing the EPG thinking there may be some pattern, but there wasn't... even more strange, the listings would switch from time to time as well. For example, Monday was showing programmes for BBC1 and BBC2 but nothing for ITV or C4. Half hour later, BBC1 and BBC2 programmes had vanished off the list, but ITV and C4 had appeared! It definitely appeared as if something was clashing and causing the Humax to confuse itself.

The problem carried on throughout Saturday, however by Sunday morning I noticed that all channels had the EPG loaded for the full week, with no visible data missing at all. Touch wood, it appears to have been okay ever since.

Not quite sure what happened, or indeed if I fixed it or if it fixed itself. Many thanks for your assistance, I will keep your notes to hand should everything fall over again in a few weeks time...
