Holme Moss (North Yorkshire, England) analogue radio transmitter

UK Free TV shows the coverage area for a radio transmitter as a coloured overlay (orange for FM, other colours for DAB) on the grey map. We have computed the coverage by combining the terrain with the official radiation pattern. A single click will select the transmitter to view the coverage for a single site, and a double click goes to a page showing full details. Click on the buttons in the right-hand corner of the map to choose from different frequencies (or multiplexes for DAB).
Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Holme Moss (North Yorkshire, England) mast?

Why did the HOLME MOSS BBC RADIO 2 FM/VHF 89.3 MHz Transmitter go off air briefly this morning during POPMASTER about 10:450am and even when it came back it was distorted for a while. No apology and impossible to get hold of anyone at the BBC to discuss it !!

The BBC are normally very good at listing any faults with their services, I had a look yesterday and again today and nothing has been listed for Holme Moss.
One can only assume that it might either have been a very brief power interruption or you suffered some local interference which thankfully cleared up quickly.

Since Radio Wales stole our Radio 3 Llangollen transmitter we in north Wales have to rely on Holme Moss. This is OK using a good receiver and a chimney mounted aerial but not so good on a portable radio or as in my case the radio function on a mobile phone. On Monday and Tuesday nights after midnight Radio 3 was absent but present the following mornings. I did not check R 2 or R4 from Holme Moss. Is this planned closure fo maintenance etc or a fault.

Jim Maxwell: There is currently planned maintenance taking place at Holme Moss. Radio 3 is still available on FM and DAB from other transmitters, as well as via Freeview, satellite and BBC Sounds so most listeners will be able to listen via an alternative way whilst Holme Moss is off air.

I live just across the border in north Wales 56 miles from Holme Moss, some 450ft ASL. I use a 5 element chimney mounted aerial and have an unimpeded path to the transmitter. Radios 1,2,3 and Classic FM are received with good signal strength - 60dB as shown on the signal strength meter on my Hitachi FT-5500 mkii tuner, but R4 is much weaker at 48dB. Has anybody any explanation as to why this should be?

Hi. I can't currently find any BBC reports about any faults, and theirs no current weather conditions that might affecting signal transmission according to the various predictions.
It might just be worth double checking your aerial is still pointing correctly. Recent winds may have shifted it.
How old is the FM aerial and downlead? Any water ingress or bad connections maybe causing standing waves in the cable which will be frequency dependant,, again worth checking connections etc.
If the problem is the same when you see this reply, post back and I'll check again for BBC reports.

Silly point really, but I assume you've checked you are tuned to 93.7 for R4 and not 93.3 Llangollen transmitter?

No, definitely 93.7. Checked again this morning and R4 back in line with others regarding signal strength. So, unless there was some engineering work, which wasn't flagged, it will remain a mystery. Again, thanks for your help.

Well definitely a bit odd. If you've given your aerial system and connections a checkout then it could still be an unreported fault or engineering. If it were propagation, then I'd expected the signal to make a gradual change (although it could do so fairly quickly) rather than suddenly much weaker. There's still no propagation predictions suggesting this might be the cause, but there could be temperature inversion which is probably something you can't readily predict in a particular location, but I would have expected other signals to be affected in some way.
Have you had a look for any very strong signals on adjacent frequencies - it's possible some sort of interference might be causing the receiver to be desensitised around 93.7 - some electrical/electronic gadgets, LED Christmas lights etc. or even a pirate radio station!!
I can't think of any other possibilities at present, if I do I'll post again and I'll check for any BBC reports as well.
