How would I know if I need a wide band ariel or high gain? I live in a bungalow and my television shows signal strength of 49% also I don't know which transmitter I'm on, Emley Moor or Sheffield. Ariel located outside 6 metres up location S43 4LB. Can anyone help? Thanks Joe

Joe Willey: If your aerial is pointed at Emley Moor, the elements (small rods) will be horizontal (i.e. pointing side to side) whereas for Sheffield they will be vertical (elements pointing up and down). Emley Moor shows a much stronger predicted signal for your location, so if your aerial currently points at Sheffield you should consider changing it for a wide band aerial pointed at Emley Moor.

Joe Willey:
A log-periodic aerial would always be preferable as that will allow you to receive current transmissions as well as those planned for the foreseeable future. Providing your TV equipment is capable of receiving HD programmes (on 101 for example) then you would be ready for the changes planned over the next few years.
A high gain aerial is only needed when the received signal strength is low. At 49% yours is marginal and your might benefit from an aerial with a slightly higher gain, subject to not overloading your tuners.
You may find that you're tuned to the Chesterfield transmitter, or either Emley Moor or possibly Sheffield. The best way to tell is to check which multiplex you get BBC1 on. Check the number and if it's 47 then you are on Emley Moor, if it is 27 then you are on Sheffield, if it is 26 then you are on Chesterfield (which is poor in your location).
Let us know what you find out from the checks suggested.

Hi,
I live in Clay Cross, S45 9EQ, south of Chesterfield; I receive my Freeview from the Waltham transmitter using a boosted loft aerial. A few days ago the programs on my SD TV and through my SD/HD digibox both started playing up. The picture has blanks, pixilation, breakup and frame mixing, accompanied by loss of sound, 'wheezes and sqeaks' and even loud cracks.
I have followed your recommendations, but there is no improvement. Neither are there any reported engineering works or breakdowns.
Do you know if the dreaded 4g has started in this area?

Eric Brett: I know Waltham is fine, because I'm on it. I'd start by checking if your actually tuned into Waltham - you could have got another transmitter by accident.
Ifvyou are on Waltham, check the signal strengths on the muxes - too much signal will be as bad as too little. I'm the same distance as you are from Waltham, and although I have an outdoor aerial (but no booster), I have to kill my signal strength. It could be you've always been on the cusp, but something has happened. And that goes the other way - your system might be developing a fault.
