No, you cannot use a satellite box to receive terrestrial programmes.

I don't want to use a satellite box I have a freeview box. I want to know if an existing dish for sky can be use with the freeview box.Can I use a cable splitter and run one end to the sky box the the other to a freeview box and get the freeview channels.

You cannot use a Freeview receiver with a satellite dish, only an aerial.

You also cannot split a satellite signal from a dish, if you want to run more than one box you must use a dual- or quad-LNB on the satellite dish and have a cable to each satellite receiver.

john : Sorry, you say you already "use the freview hd" and then ask how to "switch from sky to freeview". I'm confused as to what you could possibly mean.

john: As you have said that you use the Freeview built into the TV upstairs then you must be using a dual standard TV, as to receive Sky upstairs you must have had to change its operating mode from DVB to analogue to do this.

So what is it that you want to be able to switch to Freeview on?

What you mention about the picture being grainy can be caused by using a reasonably powerful booster on the normal aerial that's plugged into the Sky boxes input, or possibly by the Sky box having a weak RF modulator, so try setting the Sky boxes RF output channel on a much lower number, re-tuning the upstairs TV to find the new channel, plus of course ensuring that the new channel number is not clashing with a Freeview (or analogue) channel being received on normal aerial.

Cannot advise on best channels to use as you have not indicated your location.(post code).

I think I understand what you mean but I could be wrong

The picture you describe as grainy is the picture from your sky box downstairs and you use state

we also use the freview hd builtin to the upstairs tv

Im assuming what you mean is you take your sky HD remote upstairs and can change channels on the sky box

Am I correct so far?

Sounds like the connection from the sky box downstairs is poor - but good enough to pass power to the sky eye you have?
or the sky output is on the same frequency as a nearby receiving transmitter (cross modulation)

but me Brian and JB need more info about how your system is set up to offer some advice

am I on the right track or not

I have just bought a freesat package from ALDI to get HD After fixing it all up I got no signal (sat028.2E Ku Astra2abd euro 1)Checked all again still no signal. I have SKY freeview which works fine so pluged my SKY lead into freesat box and got great results from this sat(euro 1)so if I put a splitter on the cable would both the boxes work as they both work fine by switching the cable from one to the other. On the package deal I suspect the LNB is not working.

Fred Boyd: No! You must not split the cable from a satellite connection. If you want to run more than one tuner from a dish, you must fit (or use an existing) quad-LNB and run a cable for each connection.

have had sky for 14yrs. the dish and brackets are mainly made up of rust. tried to get them to replace them but they wanted to charge silly money. as the reception was poor i canceled with them. had loads of offers since but i refuse to pay any more to them as they have had more money than i want to think about.any way i have been useing the sky for freeview.then last week they spoke to my wife on the phone asking my wife are we still useing the box and what make of tv we have. she told them and a week later all are signal is gone. no freeview.can sky do this ?

chris: No, they can't, but if your box has stopped working, see the three methods on the What can I do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' or 'Technical fault'? | - independent free digital TV advice page.

They have no way of disabling the freeview channels on your box

well not all of them anyhow - if there is an issue it would say something about your card not being authorised but bbc1 and 2 woulld not stop working

what silly prices did they quote they usually have a set fee of £65 to resolve issues which is reasonable
