I might have to change the symbol so it doesn't seem to indicate a transmitter, as it indicates a region.

I wonder how they work out the number of homes - guesstimate? The checker indicates I should get best reception from Onich (I don't). When I lived in Fort William,
Cow Hill reception was so bad I had to get Sky. Many in Fort William flats have aerials stuck out the window pointing at Torosay, which must be about 35 miles away, which underlines how bad Cow Hill reception is for some.

Or maybe it was to get digital channels, none of which were available from Cow Hill.

George Buchanan: The figures provided by Ofcom make the assumption that each household in the country will use the transmitter with the strongest signal. This is done on 100m square basis and calculated using detailed population density information.

It's not a guess, it is a calculation.

I live within line of sight of Waltham transmitter so why does South Yorks & Lincolnshire keep coming up as my signal source

Sid Wyles: The area receives a good signal from both Waltham and Belmont. As Belmont PSB1&2 are on a lower frequency, they are found first when scanning for channels. In this situation many tuners will store the first set of channels found in the LCN (normal) positions in the channel list, with regional alternatives (eg Waltham) stored in the 800s.

Hi. This is probably an FAQ but I'm unfamiliar with the layout of this site.

I live in South East London (SE2 district). Our communal aerial points firmly to Woolwich; we don't have line-of-sight to Crystal Palace. Woolwich is identified here as a "light" transmitter, offering only PSB1, 2 and 3. And yet I receive the full spectrum including the COMn muxes at the same quality level.

How does this work, then?

JR: Because the signals are being picked up from a full service transmitter, the most likely being Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace is on a bearing 49 degrees anti-clockwise of Woolwich and it broadcasts horizontally rather than vertically.

Looking at Streetview there is a mixture of the two on Abbey Road.

Many communal aerial systems are filtered so as to only allow through channels used by the transmitter in question. This is evidently not the case here.

You should be able to confirm where the channels are being received from by viewing the signal strength screen for the following:

PSB1 Woolwich=C60 | Crystal Palace=C23
PSB2 W=C57 | CP=C26
PSB3 W=C53 | CP=C30
COM4 CP=C25
COM5 CP=C22
COM6 CP=C28

Derek Hirons: Com4, otherwise known as the SDN multiplex was transmitted on C62 from Oxford until the frequency was changed to C50 in order to clear the C61 to C69 section of the UHF spectrum for 4G mobile usage. So manual tune to C50 at present.
